When you loosen or tighten the center joint, it does so gradually, and the arm articulates with a corresponding amount of friction. One advantage of this is that you won’t accidentally loosen the arm to the point that your monitor flops and crashes against your camera. If the arm, for example, is three-quarters of the way tight, it will still keep its position when you let go, but it will also let you further adjust the position without having to loosen the center.
